Backup and Replication

Proxmox Backup Server Deployment and Support

Back up your virtual machines, containers and physical servers with Proxmox Backup Server: incremental, encrypted and verifiable.

Isometric illustration: virtual machine and container data flows as incremental blocks into a locked Proxmox Backup Server appliance, with a verification badge and a restore arrow.

What is Proxmox Backup Server?

Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) is an enterprise backup solution for backing up and restoring virtual machines, containers and physical servers. It is open source, distributed under the GNU AGPLv3 license, and its whole software stack is written in Rust.

With each backup, PBS sends only the changed data and does not store identical data blocks twice. This incremental, deduplicated design cuts backup time and storage needs considerably. Data is compressed with ZSTD and, if required, encrypted on the client side with AES-256-GCM before it reaches the server.

It integrates tightly with Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE): you back up virtual machines and containers in Proxmox VE directly to PBS. As of October 2026, the current release is Proxmox Backup Server 4.2.

Local backup with a copy in the cloud: the files of the office server are backed up, one copy goes to the cloud, and the team checks the backup status in reports.

Proxmox Backup Server with Synchron

As a Proxmox Authorized Reseller, Synchron designs, deploys, licenses and operates your backup infrastructure. Our goal is that you know in advance which data you can restore, and how fast, when disaster strikes.

Proxmox Backup Server deduplication: repeated data blocks reduce to single copies, go to the datastore and sync to a locked second site
  • Deployment and backup design

We define your backup objectives (RPO/RTO) and set up the PBS server, datastores, retention rules and scheduled jobs to meet them.

  • Migration from your current backup

We plan the move from your current backup solution to PBS so that old backups stay accessible for their full retention period.

  • License and subscription sales

We choose the right subscription level for each PBS server, supply the subscription as a Proxmox Authorized Reseller and track renewals.

  • Monitoring and support

We monitor backup tasks, verification results and storage usage and respond to errors. Our support line is open 24/7. We prioritize requests by business impact. Proxmox subscription support is vendor support.

  • Training and restore drills

We teach your team to manage PBS and, with regular restore tests, verify together that the backups really work. We set the content and frequency of training and drills according to the project scope.

Proxmox Backup Server features

  • Incremental, deduplicated backups

Only changed blocks are transferred and identical data is not stored again, so the backup window and disk needs shrink.

  • Client-side encryption

Data is encrypted at the source with AES-256-GCM, so you can send backups safely even to a target you do not fully trust.

  • Integrity verification

Scheduled verification jobs check the SHA-256 checksum of every backup and detect corruption early.

  • File-level and live restore

You can restore a single file or start a virtual machine while its restore is still running.

  • Remote sync

Sync jobs copy your backups to a PBS server in another location.

  • Tape support

With LTO tape libraries you create an additional copy for offline and long-term retention.

Use cases

  • Proxmox VE backup: Back up the virtual machines and containers of your Proxmox VE cluster to a central, deduplicated datastore.
  • 3-2-1 backup rule: Keep three copies on different media: a local PBS, a second PBS at a remote site and tape.
  • Ransomware readiness: Keep a clean recovery point after an attack with separation of privileges, regular verification and remote/offline copies.
  • Backing up physical Linux servers: Back up physical Linux servers from the same central point with the Proxmox Backup client.

A subscription is bought separately for each Proxmox Backup Server and is valid for one year. Each subscribed server includes unlimited backup storage and unlimited backup clients. The software features are the same at every level; the levels differ in support scope.

Support in the subscription levels is Proxmox vendor support. In Synchron support, our support line takes your request and prioritises it by business impact. Request a quote for the right level and price.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proxmox Backup Server free?

Yes. Proxmox Backup Server is open source and free to use under the GNU AGPLv3 license. For business use, a subscription provides Enterprise Repository updates and, depending on the level, Proxmox technical support.

How is the Proxmox Backup Server license calculated?

The subscription is bought per year for each PBS server. The number of backed-up virtual machines, the number of clients and the storage capacity do not affect the subscription price.

Does Proxmox Backup Server work only with Proxmox VE?

No. PBS backs up Proxmox VE virtual machines and containers through native integration, and physical Linux servers with the Proxmox Backup client.

Why use PBS when Proxmox VE has its own backup?

PBS adds incremental transfer, deduplication, client-side encryption, live restore and single-file restore to the built-in backup of Proxmox VE. This shortens backup times and reduces storage needs.

Does Proxmox Backup Server protect against ransomware?

PBS is not a security product on its own. However, fine-grained permissions, integrity verification and copies to a remote site or tape make it easier to return to a clean backup after an attack. We build these layers according to the 3-2-1 rule.

How can I be sure my backups work?

Scheduled PBS verification jobs check the integrity of the backups. In addition, Synchron confirms with periodic restore tests that the backups really restore.

Can I copy my backups to another location?

Yes. Sync jobs transfer backups to a second PBS server, and the transfer can be encrypted. With tape support you can also keep an offline copy.
